About ars gratia populi

Ars Gratia Populi (Latin for "art for the people's sake") is a vocal ensemble founded in 2023 by Kevin Elam to explore the interplay between art music and folk music in an acapella setting. The group's name, which is a play on the well-known maxim ars gratia artis ("art for art's sake"), is intended to portray the view that music, and art more generally, derives its meaning not from itself, but from the positive reaction it can create in the human mind and soul. By combining the technical excellence of a polyphonic chamber choir with the relaxed, accessible presentation of a folk group, Ars Gratia Populi seeks to foster just such a reaction in our audiences, and inspire them to value ever more highly the unaccompanied human voice as a unique means of expression and connection.
